What to do in Kotor during the day and at night?

In some of our previous blogs we mentioned Kotor as a destination in Montenegro that is beloved by many. Why is that so? The answer to that is simple – the combination of extreme natural beauty and Kotor’s historical significance makes this small coastal town impeccable for any travel enthusiast.

Owing to the increasing number of cruise ships that dock in the town’s harbour year-round, Kotor has seen a dramatic surge in popularity in recent years. A lot of those people are only going to be able to explore the town for just a day, but many will find themselves wanting to return. Whether you get only one day or a whole week, there are numerous things to do in Kotor.

Let us take you on a journey to explore what is the best of Kotor, no matter if you are in a hurry or at leisure, in need of sunscreen or an umbrella!

What to do in Kotor for a day?

It can be an overwhelming feeling when lack of time hinders you from enjoying the beauties of a new place. Kotor is no exception. If you want to revel in this breathtaking location, here is a list of a few things to do so you can say that you have truly experienced Kotor.

1.   Roam the cobbled streets of the Old Town

What better way to explore a new town than wandering around its streets? Within the fortified stone walls lies Kotor’s true treasure, its Old Town. This well-preserved medieval town is a UNESCO Heritage Site. The best way to experience it is to just let your feet take you from numerous alleyways to great piazzas, all of which are full of hidden churches, museums, and souvenir shops. Every corner holds a piece of history that is waiting to be found.

2.   Explore the great outdoors

Towering above the Old Town, you will see San Giovanni Fortress, which is a great sight to see. However, with a hike up to the fortress you will be rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of the Bay of Kotor. The hike consists of a flight of stairs (1.350 steps) and it takes no more than 2 hours to finish, which can perfectly fit a tight schedule.

3.   Drive along the Serpentine Road

This is a famous twisting road that leads up to Lovcen National Park and also connects Kotor and Cetinje. Having 25 bends the road offers both challenging and adventurous driving. The drive itself is no longer than half an hour, but every local will suggest embarking on the road early in the day for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the traffic. Secondly, the designated points where you can stop and relish some unparalleled views of the Bay of Kotor are bound to prolong your drive.

4.   Unwind on the beach

Sometimes it is best to simply slow down and enjoy a nice day at a beach. Kotor has one town beach covered by white pebbles, where you can sunbathe, take a plunge in the bay waters, or enjoy a nice meal and beverage in one of many waterfront cafes and restaurants.

What to do in Kotor on a rainy day?

There is nothing a person would like more than agreeable weather during their vacation. If the weather permits, the majority of tourists, when in Montenegro, will spend their days on the beaches along the Adriatic Sea. However, if you find yourself in Montenegro, especially in Kotor, on a rainy day you will be given a great opportunity to explore its rich cultural and historical landmarks. Besides enjoying a warm cup of coffee in a cozy cafe, here are a few suggestions on how to enliven a gloomy day.

1.   Museum hopping

What better shelter from bad weather than a museum? Museums are tranquil and entertaining. They offer a wonderful insight into a piece of history, enriching your experience and broadening your understanding of a certain culture.

Kotor, with its long and rich history, is brimming with museums. You should start your route by visiting Kotor’s Maritime Museum, and learn more about the seafaring history in the region. Afterward, head over to the church of St. Michael on Cinema Square, where Kotor Lapidarium is located. The Lapidarium contains one of  Montenegro’s greatest collections of stone monuments and archaeological fragments dating back to the Roman Empire. Finally, you can pay a visit to the Cat Museum, a small and quirky museum dedicated to our feline friends.

2.   Visit a local winery

The wine scene in Montenegro is on the rise, a fact not a lot of people are familiar with. Beautiful and scenic vineyards are dotted all over the country, and with a short trip from Kotor, you can stumble upon many such hidden gems. Many wineries offer an insight into the manufacturing process, as well as wine tastings and selections of local cured meats and cheeses. You are bound to enjoy yourself with good company, great hospitality, and splendid scenery.

3. Try Montenegro’s culinary delights

Kotor’s culinary scene is a pure rapture for food lovers. You can try some traditional food like Njeguški pršut (smoked ham) or kačamak (creamy cornmeal porridge). Many restaurants along the waterfront offer exceptional local flavors made with fresh seafood like black risotto (made with squid ink) or grilled fish.

If you wish to bring your culinary experience to another level, there is an option to take up a cooking class hosted by local prominent chefs. You will not only have an opportunity to excite your taste buds with local delights but will also learn how to make them yourself.  A great skill to have once you are back home and missing the tastes of Montenegro.

What to do in Kotor at night?

Once the sun sets, Kotor turns into a dynamic nightlife scene. Live music can be heard from the back alleys of the old town, bars are full of tourists and locals alike, and the energetic atmosphere fills the air.

Dance the night away in Maximus

If you are looking for a crazy night out, you have to go to Maximus. This is the biggest nightclub in the country that hosts many regionally famous singers and DJs, and, most importantly, works late into the night.

Enjoy a night of jazz

In the streets of Kotor, there are a lot of bars that offer a more private and artistic experience. A great example is Jazz Club Evergreen. Relax with a night of smooth jazz music on a terrace, sip your drink, and breathe in the salt-rich air.

Visit a festival

If you plan your trip carefully, you might find yourself in Kotor during cultural and music manifestations. Throughout summer there are a number of concerts in the Old Town squares, as well as many festivals with theatrical and music performances.

If any of the things listed above sound appealing to you, wait no longer and start planning your next trip to Kotor!
